Early Admission to Kindergarten
Early Admission to Kindergarten Applications for the 2024-2025 school year are accepted from April 3, 2024 - May 15, 2024. Students eligible for early admission to kindergarten have a birthday that falls between September 2, 2019 and October 15, 2019. To apply for Early Admission Testing please click here!
Per Maryland State Department of Education regulations, to be eligible to enter kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year, children must be five years of age by September 1, 2024.
Children who will turn five years old between September 2 and October 15, 2024 are eligible for consideration for the early entrance to kindergarten process. To be recommended for early entrance to kindergarten, children will need to demonstrate above average performance and development in academic skills as well as social/emotional and physical development. The standards for early entrance are very high to ensure that students are not frustrated by their advanced grade placement. Applicants are assessed by an experienced early childhood educator and must receive scores within a specified range.
One testing date will be assigned to each applicant. The date, time, and location of the individualized testing will be provided to parents/guardians; rescheduling of the testing date will only occur for uncontrollable circumstances (i.e., illness). Applicants cannot be retested for any reason.
There will be no consideration, including an appeals process, for children with birthdates beyond October 15th.
AACPS offers kindergarten programs in all elementary schools. Children must be five years old on or before September 1 to be eligible. Kindergarten is required for all students living in the state of Maryland. While Maryland law requires kindergarten attendance, it does give parents the right to delay kindergarten for one year (waiver).
Delay of Kindergarten Enrollment Maturity Waiver
State Board of Education regulations allow parents/guardians to submit a one year level of maturity waiver for a kindergarten aged child if the parents believe that a delay in kindergarten attendance is in the best interest of their child. Such a child, however, must attend kindergarten the next year. Students who are age eligible for kindergarten and on a kindergarten waiver are not able to attend public prekindergarten. For more information call 410-222-5441.
If a child's parent(s) or legal guardian(s) wishes that kindergarten attendance be deferred for one year due to the child's level of maturity, the parent or guardian must do the following:
- File a completed Kindergarten Waver Request (English) & Kindergarten Waver Request (Spanish) form with the Early Childhood Office, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD 21401. Approval will be considered by the Deputy Superintendent of Schools before the opening of the school year in which the child turns five years old; and
-
Register that child in kindergarten the following school year.
-
If a parent or legal guardian feels that it is in the best interest of the child who is already enrolled in kindergarten to be withdrawn from kindergarten, the parent or guardian may file a written request to withdraw the child from the program and delay kindergarten attendance until the following school year.
