•      Principal’s Message - March 2024

Gator Families—Like most of you, I am hoping March will bring on the Spring weather!  We’ve had plenty of sickness, and with just a little winter weather this year, I’m hopeful we can push through. Spring Break is a few weeks off, but in the meantime we have some events coming up. We’ve updated the calendar for you so you can plan ahead. We hope to see you at the upcoming Book Fair launch and Science Fair viewing on the 15th!

As we head into this next stretch of the school year, I encourage you to look at your child’s attendance totals. As mentioned throughout the school year, the Maryland State Department of Education considers students who are absent more than 10% of the time chronically absent. That means, at this time of year, we are looking closely at students who have missed more than 12 days. We appreciate those families who communicate with their child’s teacher and the office so we can accurately mark absences. Our teachers take attendance daily when students arrive in the classroom. For those students who are tardy, the office has to manually override the absence after students are signed in. We make all efforts to do this before the 10am absence call goes to parents, but know that on days when we are short staffed or extra busy, this may not happen in time. If you get an absence phone call and you know your child is at school, you can always call the office to check in. Also, our attendance secretary has to manually enter parent and doctor notes and in some cases, change absences from truant to excused once a reason is provided. All of this takes time, so please give us a day or two after your child is absent. After that time, if you notice an error or have a question, please check in with us.

We are hopeful all parents are utilizing the Parent Portal in order to check grades and assignments (grades 1-5 only). You can also check your child’s attendance in that system. See us if you need directions on how to create an account. Keeping you informed is a continued goal of ours.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support!

      Mrs. Colleen Harris
