The Lake Shore Elementary School Library Media Center

  • The Lake Shore Media Center offers a variety of services for all Lake Shore students. Renovated in 1999, it is now a bright and spacious area with over 7000 books, an automated check out system, 12 card catalog computers, and Internet access. All kindergarten through fifth grade classes are scheduled once a week for 30 minutes of media lessons. Book selection is included during this time.

Small groups may come to the center to do research using the reference books or the electronic encyclopedias. It is open four days at recess for book exchange and reading.

The Library Media program ensures that all students:

    learn information skills
use information skills effectively to solve problems
explore literature and reading for the purpose of lifelong learning
Grade K-2 emphasis is on literature with some beginning location and research skills.

Grade 3 - 5 focuses on Information Problem Solving. Media skills are integrated with classroom units where possible. For example, fourth graders may do research on animals of Kenya (a fourth grade social studies unit). They will each publish/write a page to compile a class book.
The Media Center sponsors a Spring and Fall Book Fair. Profits have been used to buy hundreds of new books for the library. Mrs. Jean Smith, the Media Specialist, invites all students to participate in book clubs.

    • Grades 1 - Chessie Beginner Club
    • Grade 2 - Chessie Jr. Club
    • Grade 3 - Chessie Club
    • Grades 4 and 5 - Black-eyed Susan Club

Library Media Vision & Mission

  • The Office of Library Media Services envisions school libraries that are the hub of the school and are innovative, vibrant, and flexible spaces, staffed with school librarians who inspire students to become tech savvy and independent life-long readers and learners.

The mission of the Office of Library Media Services is to develop students who are lifelong readers and effective users of technology and information. We do this by teaching critical thinking, research skills and ensuring access to information resources and literature.  The curriculum is designed to teach library media skills and information literacy at appropriate levels. In collaboration with the teachers, the library media specialist has developed an instructional program based on curriculum and the needs of the student population.

Over 1.6 million items are checked out each year to students and faculty.
