Dear Maryland City Families,
My name is Laura Cooke, and I am the principal at Maryland City Elementary School. This school has hard-working students, dedicated staff members, and devoted parents! It’s a pleasure to be the leader of such a harmonious school community. Prior to coming to Maryland City, I had several other experiences in education spanning 29 years. My experiences include teaching fourth and fifth grades, being an elementary counselor in four schools, working as a middle school counselor, fulfilling the role of pupil personnel worker in grades pre-k through 12 and serving as the assistant principal at Crofton, Oak Hill, and Severn elementary schools.
Maryland City is a targeted Title I school. Approximately 86% of our students receive free and reduced meals during the school day. Because of this, we receive funding from the federal government to support our academic program. This money is used to pay salaries of supplemental personnel, to purchase materials for our students, and to provide parent events for our Title I families. Our Title I personnel are dedicated to helping Maryland City students achieve academic success.
As a staff, we work hard to cultivate strong relationships with parents, students, faculty members, and community partners. Furthermore, we are focusing on using data to drive instruction, implementing strategies to increase students’ achievement on Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards, and providing exciting and challenging enrichment opportunities for all students. Our school improvement plan aligns with these initiatives.
We will continue to provide Maryland City students opportunities to prepare them to be world-class citizens ready to master challenges of the 21st century. Please join us as we do so by attending school-wide events, joining the PTA, and volunteering at school. We welcome your involvement!
Respectfully,
Laura F. Cooke
