The International Baccalaureate® (IB) is committed to supporting multilingualism as a fundamental part of increasing intercultural understanding and international-mindedness, and is equally committed to extending access to an IB education for students from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) calls for all IB schools to be organized in ways that value student diversity and respect individual learning differences. Valuing diversity and difference is a key aspect of becoming more internationally minded and is an important goal of all IB programmes.
Purpose for IB Policies
The primary purpose of assessment in an IB World School is to support and encourage student learning through the gathering and analysis of information about student performance. Formative assessment, which is continuous, informs teachers about student learning and shapes and directs teaching and learning in the classroom. Summative assessment generally occurs at the end of a teaching unit, and while supporting student learning, is also used to determine achievement levels of individual students. Grading is used to communicate student achievement to students, families, and post-secondary institutions.
The IB upholds principles of academic honesty, which are seen as a set of values and skills that promote personal integrity and good practice in teaching, learning and assessment.
