Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture

  • Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:

    • What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
    • Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
    • How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
    • What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need?  How do we help our families receive the supports they need?

Our School Culture

  • Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.

Ferndale Upon entering the school office at Ferndale, it is immediately evident that this school is dedicated to the youngest learners. You will find a warm and inviting environment that includes child-sized furniture, books, puzzles, and STEM-related activities.  The school halls are decorated with portraits of former Ferndale students, student artwork, and work samples. Guests and visitors are always greeted with a smile, a positive attitude, and a friendly climate.

A focus of Ferndale Early Education Center is to build an equitable environment for all students and staff. Through county-led professional development opportunities we have increased our knowledge about equitable practices.  Our goal is to meet the needs of all students by supporting their social-emotional well-being. This is evident through daily Community Circles where students share their thoughts and ideas to build a classroom community where everyone feels safe, valued, and loved.  Additional social-emotional support is provided through lessons, read-alouds, and a partnership with Villa Maria Behavioral Health Services for identified students and their families.

Ferndale Early Education Center continues to work towards our goal  of creating a Culture of Literacy. Students are offered free books through the “Read Wagon” at arrival and dismissal every day.  Students receive additional free books throughout the year. Parent Family Engagement events focus on building our families’ home libraries while educating our parents on the importance of incorporating literacy into their daily routines. Literacy events include an annual “Reading Party” where students are immersed in a half- day activity where books and story characters are brought to life.

Ferndale Early Education Center strives to foster a love of learning for the entire school community by providing a positive first school experience for our students and families. Ferndale parents express their appreciation for the attention to detail shown by the staff; and often share that they wish their children could continue their education at Ferndale beyond ECI, Pre-K, and Kindergarten!

CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS

  • The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community. The school’s leadership team identified the following elements as impactful for their students.
