Key Challenges to Student Success
-
The students who attend Bodkin Elementary School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood. While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Bodkin Elementary, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.
This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.
Challenges to Student Success
-
Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges
- Discipline Rates
- Numbers of 504 students
- Special Education student enrollment
- Quarterly Assessments scores - English
- Quarterly Assessments scores - Mathematics
- PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
- PARCC Scores - English/Language Arts (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
Key Challenge #1: Quarterly Assessments scores - English/Language Arts
On Reading Quarterly Assessments, Standard 1 (Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text) scores are historically lower than other standards. This standard is assessed the most frequently across the intermediate grades; and Part A and Part B questions are introduced in grade two. In grade three, the Standard 1 was assessed eight times and students earned an average of 63% on these items. In grade four, the Standard 1 was assessed seven times and students earned an average of 55% on questions aligned to this standard. This particular standard requires students to refer to the text to show evidence of understanding and to support their answer. Through modeling and employing various questioning strategies across content areas, students are given multiple opportunities throughout the day to show and explain their thinking.
Key Challenge #2: Quarterly Assessments scores - Mathematics
On Math Quarterly Assessments, students in grades 3-5 score historically lower on Number and Operations in Base Ten, specifically the grade levels fluency standard. This standard requires students to have a strong number sense and be able to manipulate numbers, recognize relationships between operations, and have a strong understanding of place value through a variety of strategies and models. Vertical teaming provides the platform for grade levels to share student work and the strategies introduced within the math standard to support fluency.
Students have access to various programs, including First In Math, to strengthen their number sense and fluency while teachers continue to differentiate based on student needs.
