Key Challenges to Student Success
-
The students who attend Van Bokkelen Elementary School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood. While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Van Bokkelen Elementary, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.
This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.
Challenges to Student Success
-
Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges
- Discipline Rates
- LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students
- Title I Status
- Quarterly Assessments scores - English
- Quarterly Assessments scores - Mathematics
- PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
- AAA Status,
- PARCC Scores - English/Language Arts (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
The PARCC school data from the 2017-2018 school year indicated that students in all demographic groups need support in mathematics and Reading instruction to increase student achievement. The ESOL population is growing rapidly and teacher capacity to meet the needs of this growing population is high; thus, the school improvement plan was designed to increase instructional strategies that would meet the needs of ESOL students in all grades, regardless of national or local assessments that students would take. The strategies selected to meet ESOL students’ needs would also meet the needs of all students; thus, impacting achievement for all students.
Math instruction was selected as an indicator. Then after a deeper dive into the data and consideration of teacher needs, this focus was taken off of the school improvement plan. However, the leadership team decided to create structures to monitor achievement through class visits and data analysis meetings.
In the Spring 2018, both math and Reading was chosen to be a focus for the school improvement plan. With a deeper dive into the achievement data and review of teacher needs, the focus shifted to allow for refinement of instruction for ESOL students.
Looking at the increase of ESOL students from 15-16 to 17-18 and considering the current enrollment for students who would take PARCC was the primary reason to focus on the instructional needs of these students. This data includes exited students. Students taking PARCC increased from 12 in 15-16 to 27 in 17-18.
-
Non-Traditional Socio-Economic Challenges
- Limited English proficiency for students and/or families
ESOL enrollment has more than doubled since 15-16. In order to meet the needs of the students and families for this demographic, teacher capacity would need to be developed for instruction and in order to maintain open communication with families. The 18-19 school improvement focus would begin with instruction.
