Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Waugh Chapel is a warm, welcoming place where children love learning and teachers give their all each and every day! The teachers and staff in our school collaborate often and truly enjoy each other, our students and our community. Our recent MDS3 Climate Survey results are reflective of the positive school culture that exists at Waugh Chapel.
- 90.7% of students feel that they belong
- 96.8% of students feel safe at school
- 97.3% of students feel like their teachers care about them
- 97.83% of students feel their teachers encourage them to work hard in their classes
Our school has implemented Morning Meetings schoolwide this year in an effort to start every day off with a positive, regulated experience that prepares children for the day ahead. We have seen the ever-increasing need for social and emotional learning in our school, and the Morning Meetings teach the social skills that some of our students lack or need reinforced. Our Morning Meetings consist of a greeting, a sharing session, a cooperative game, goal-setting, and reviewing the agenda for the day. Our students have come to love this time together and have taken ownership of several parts of the process.
Waugh Chapel has also implemented a Ticket Trolley system to support our Positive Behavior program. Through our Ticket Trolley system, students earn tickets for being kind and then they can exchange them for intangible rewards.
The teachers at Waugh Chapel Elementary range from the very young new teacher, to the veteran teacher. We enjoy teacher longevity and very low teacher turnover. Waugh Chapel is a wonderful place to work, and teachers who come to Waugh Chapel stay for the majority of their teaching career. That being said, we did experience some staffing changes while going through the IB school certification process. Through the process, we came together, worked very hard, and grew as a staff and community of learners. As a result, the culture of the school is in a great place!

Centrally located within the community, Waugh Chapel Elementary really is the “heart” of the area. Parent involvement is strong and our PTA is extremely supportive of our students, our teachers and our school administration. Waugh Chapel also has an established Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program, where fathers and adult role models come into our school to volunteer throughout the year. These male role models work with the general student population, and also take time to mentor students who are in need of a little extra support.
We have several extracurricular activities which are hosted by either a teacher or have been advocated for by students. These activities include Chess Club, Sea Perch, Girls on the Run, HERO Boys, Fitness Club, 24 Club, Travel Club, Chessie Reading Club, and Dance Team to name a few. In addition, our 5th graders are given the opportunity to join the National Junior Honor Society, and they lead many community fundraisers of their choosing.
Lastly, we are grateful for the ongoing support of our business partners, Patient First, Ledo’s and Chick-fil-A. Each of these community partners reach out to our school to help us to raise money, celebrate our teachers, host community nights, and just be a part of the Waugh Chapel Elementary school community wherever they can.
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS

The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community.
