Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
A high-quality education is what we are all about at Crofton Woods, and we are on the leading edge of developing 21st-century learners. The school hosts many evening events, both inside and outside of school, in order to inform and engage families in the learning that is happening in school. Engagement comes in many forms in the classrooms, from growing and releasing monarch butterflies each fall, to having students simulate a real congressional hearing in the spring. Special day-time programs, such as our Community Service days, Unity Celebrations, and STEMtastic Week, bring excitement to the classrooms, while evening programs such as STEMtastic night and the Innovators of Science & Engineering Challenge (ISEC) fair bring learning and families together. In fact, our STEMtastic Evening program won the South River Cluster Exemplary Program Award for 2019. Our PTA also supports many extracurricular clubs, including wonderful opportunities such as robotics, Girls on the Run, gaming, and computer programming. Volunteerism is another touchstone of Crofton Woods, with an outstanding number of hours logged in each year. Our volunteers, parents and community members, provide an immeasurable amount of support to the students, the staff, and the entire school and are engaged in making a difference daily.

Crofton Woods Elementary offers a wealth of opportunities for students to engage in service, such as an annual Community Service Day. This wonderful event finds our students engaged in feeding those in need, raising funds for the SPCA, creating random acts of kindness, and much more. Crofton Woods is also a leader in the community through service to others through the Human Relations Committee and the AACPS Harvest for the Hungry program. Crofton Woods has been one of the top donating elementary schools in food and monetary donations in Anne Arundel County for the past 5 years running. The desire to help others extends to the “Jump Rope for the Heart” Campaign, through which we achieved the honor of being the top donating school in 2019 in Anne Arundel County. Crofton Woods has been a Maryland Green School since 2012 and is continuing its commitment to environmental responsibility.
We also enjoy welcoming the community into our building for many special events, which we believe helps to develop our students and create a sense of belonging and connectedness. We celebrate many events on a grand scale, such as a moving and patriotic Veteran’s Day celebration in which we showcase parents, grandparents, and community members who serve our country. Our Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day brings hundreds of visitors who create special bonds with our students and build memories they will never forget. Our choral, band, and strings concerts are something that all stakeholders enjoy, and they always bring an added sense of pride to all our students and families. Our family picnics in the spring bring everyone together for a time of fun and fellowship.
Crofton Woods is a truly special place where students can discover, integrate, and certainly grow!
