Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
As you walk through the halls at Bates you feel a sense of Cougar pride. Many of the staff members are life-long residents of Anne Arundel County and have graduated from an AACPS high school, and two staff members attended Bates Middle School before graduating from Annapolis High School. The connection to our school runs deep, which allows the Cougar pride to be contagious. In addition, our staff members are constantly growing themselves in order to grow their students. Four members of the staff are published authors, three members are performing musicians, and all teachers bring their unique talents to the classroom every day.
Diversity is our strength and growing students is our passion. With the support of our community and local businesses, we provide our students with a well rounded curriculum and experiences to deepen their understanding of the world around them. Partnerships with organizations such as The Maritime Museum, Maryland Hall, NASA, Entomological Society of America, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Single Carrot Theater, and Young Audiences, have allowed our students access to rich, hands-on lessons that tie into the Anne Arundel County curriculum of study.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a program that supports positive behaviors and a multitude of supports for the students. Students can earn positive behavior referrals each week, earn Bates Bucks, which allow them the ability to purchase things from school supplies to lunch on the law, and earn tickets into school wide events. Under the umbrella of PBIS, restorative practices have been integrated into our school culture to build relationships and help repair relationships when harm was done. Each morning our students participate in a Cougar Circle with their homeroom class. They share information with each other to find additional connections, create trust and build friendships. Restorative practices are also used as a way to mediate a conflict between individuals by assisting them in listening to each other as they discuss and share their thoughts and concerns.
Bates Middle School believes in growing the whole child, therefore making a positive school culture a necessity for full growth.
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS
-
The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community. The school’s leadership team identified the following elements as impactful for their students.
