Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Monarch Academy was founded by the Children’s Guild with a belief in the power of a positive, child-centered school culture. This begins with the physical setting for learning. The Children’s Guild and Monarch Academy believe that a beautiful learning environment communicates to students that they are valued and important. Guests are often in awe as our art-filled hallways transform the space into something different from most schools.
We carry our student-centered values into all interactions with our students as we aim to build a strong community through purposeful language, community-building activities, and student efficacy. At Monarch Academy we believe in the power of students’ reflection and voices. Students demonstrate their growth and accomplishments through bi-annual grade-level “Wingspan” presentations and at their 5th and 8th grade “Passages” presentations. These forums require students to reflect on, speak about, and illustrate their learning to an audience both as a class and individually.

Monarch Academy is a special place that is intentional in how it approaches education of the whole child. It is our goal to exemplify that “All Means All” and to be the best choice for a child’s social, emotional, behavioral, and cognitive education in Anne Arundel County, and we believe that all aspects of students’ growth and development are all equally important. To that end, we partner with AACPS, the Children’s Guild / Tran Zed Alliance, and EL Education to carefully select structures and curricula that support students through this journey. Our educational program meets the criteria established by MSDE and AACPS. Monarch uses the math and science curricula from AACPS to ensure readiness for high school math course work. Monarch Academy uses the EL Education Language Arts modules for grades K-8 and the core practices of EL Education. Our partnership with EL Education also promotes our positive school culture through their central goal of educating children to be ethical people whose authentic work positively affects their local and global communities.
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS
-
The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community. The school’s leadership team identified the following elements as impactful for their students.
