Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
We at Old Mill Middle North take P.R.I.D.E in making sure each student is seen as their own unique individual. Our teachers and staff are committed to ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to show their individual strengths and learn from their struggles. We are focused on our professional development strategies and initiatives that address the many different learning styles of our students. We place great emphasis on differentiating instruction and addressing the needs of students with learning differences so that each child can reach their greatest potential. We also emphasize the importance of our Middle Years Programme in educating our students through cross-curricular connections, exposing students to Spanish, French or Chinese, and allow students to learn through utilizing the Design Cycle in order to complete a Community Project that betters the larger community where our students live.
At Old Mill Middle North we believe that helping students with their social-emotional needs is an immediate necessity in order to develop a positive sense of oneself and the world. We offer students strategies, information, and support through many avenues throughout the school day. In addition, we have added an extra counselor for more social-emotional support, we participate in community homerooms to help students learn to work through problems that relate directly to their world, we offer a variety of specialized groups such as Coping Power and Peer Mediators to give students the skills needed for appropriate interactions, and we also embrace our partnership with Villa Maria counseling services to support our students who need direct services while in a safe and accessible setting here at school.

At Old Mill Middle North we can’t hide our Patriot P.R.I.D.E! We encourage all our students to become active in our clubs and activities to help promote positive school culture. It is our belief that building a sense of community that supports all students' interests and abilities is the pinnacle of a positive culture and environment. On any given after school activity day you can see students rehearsing lines for the upcoming musical, gathering facts for the next edition of the school paper, tuning their instruments for band, orchestra, and jazz band, bonding over the newest video game at our game club, cleaning our local streams for Green Club, or perfecting the perfect layup during basketball intramurals. These are just a few examples of the clubs and activities we offer our students to promote a sense of belonging and community within our school.
Our PBIS initiatives and events help bolster student achievement and behavior. We believe in recognizing all students as they demonstrate personal growth on any level. We also believe in inclusion and acceptance of all. We P.R.I.D.E ourselves on working hard at being the best we can be everyday. We cannot hide our Patriot P.R.I.D.E!
