Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Arundel is a vibrant, passionate, student-centered community, proud of its cultural diversity and driven by a commitment to serve the whole child. At Arundel a high-energy staff challenges students, both academically and personally, to prepare them to successfully navigate an ever-changing society. Arundel is a positive and progressive educational environment that values inclusion and openness. Committed to success and growth, Arundel has a spirited, supportive, and caring atmosphere focused on individual strengths and skills, as well as the success and achievement of the entire community.
For several years, much effort has focused on strategies to help all students feel at home in our school. In order to provide an academic program that prepares all students for college and career, resources were invested in the Career Technology Education program. In addition to the traditional college-completer diploma pathway, six career completers are offered: Business Management, Career Research and Development, Food and Beverage Management, Early Childhood, Construction Design and Management, and Information Technology Software Computer Science. Many students are excited to have the opportunity to earn dual completer status by preparing for college while developing marketable career skills and earning college credit.

In addition to regular classes, students may pursue courses via the Digital Learning Center (DLC), a collaborative hub where students take on-line classes. They may take classes for original credit that otherwise would not fit into their schedules, recover credit for required courses, or students without transportation to the community college can use the DLC to participate in the Early College Access Program. The DLC enjoys a 95% completion rate.
Another Arundel High School initiative is the intentional focus of the 9th grade promotion rate. Unique strategies of student identification, academic supports, and relationship building along with compassionate scheduling has led to success. To facilitate a successful transition to high school and support non-academic success skills, Global Community Citizenship is a required Signature course for all 9th graders. This course gives students the opportunity to participate in discussions, simulations, and reflections on topics including self, stereotypes, and the community.
Arundel High School will continue to involve all stakeholders and the greater school community in school improvement initiatives to strengthen the overall school climate, increase student attendance rates, and provide college and career opportunities for all students. Our community also shares our school spirit as they attend athletic events, performing arts shows and events like our Back to School Block Party and Homecoming Parade that attracts our entire feeder.
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS
