Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Broadneck High School culture embodies diverse and rigorous academics and extracurriculars. Faculty and staff feel a sense of community which is clear from the alumni who return to teach here. Our teachers and staff are dedicated to Broadneck and to their profession. The Broadneck community is a close-knit family, proud to wear maroon and gray to showcase their school pride and spirit. Our entire community, teachers and parents included, help support and provide the top-notch education all students deserve.
The AVID program utilizes 21st century tools and best instructional practices to ensure increased academic excellence and college readiness. The Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Program (PVA) provides an opportunity for talented young musicians from all over the county to showcase their talents and develop their passion. It is not uncommon to find PVA students serenading classrooms throughout the school on the days preceding a long school break. The Broadneck Marching Band is highly competitive on the state and national level. With over 30 signature-related field experiences in 2017-2018, the Environmental Literacy Signature Program funds additional co-curricular clubs such as Envirothon Club, Recycling Club, Bay Ambassadors and Recycled Runway Club. Our teachers consistently incorporate green practices and environmental connections in their lessons. For example, students read environmentally conscious literature, test water in nearby streams and rivers, and enjoy nature walks. In 2016, Broadneck became one of 386 schools nationwide to be awarded the USDE Green Ribbon honor. This recognition is provided to schools across the nation who demonstrate effective school sustainability. Broadneck is also a Maryland Green School and a 2017 National Wildlife Foundation Eco School’s Green Flag Awardee. Our Athletics program has amassed 39 state championships while also displaying high levels of sportsmanship and community service. Other academic programs, such as BRUIN BLOCK, empower students to make responsible decisions and take accountability for their own education.
