Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture

  • Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:

    • What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
    • Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
    • How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
    • What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need?  How do we help our families receive the supports they need?

Our School Culture

  • Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.

The school culture starts with caring. We focus on caring for students and their families. We provide a welcoming and nurturing environment.

Our teachers love teaching, and they especially love building connections with their students. Their spirit and commitment to service is visible in interactions with students, in collaborating with families, and in celebrations of their students’ efforts and successes.

We know our students learn best when we partner with families. Those partnerships help our students develop independence in school, at home, and in the community. We work to provide educational opportunities for students as well as meeting their behavioral, social-emotional, and academic needs.

Every student at Marley Glen is capable of greatness. We work to nurture and deepen relationships between faculty, students, and families to support our students in their individual journeys. Our commitment to frequent and honest communication increases the effectiveness of our approach. Additionally, our staff members, paraeducators, and service providers collaborate as a team to customize plans and activities for students.

We are committed to supporting children and their families through the following strategies:

    • Connecting services to students and families
    • Working closely with families whose children may be frequently absent because of complex medical needs in order to minimize any skill losses
    • Developing the skills students will need to maximize their independence within their home communities
    • Developing inclusive opportunities for individual students (as appropriate), providing in-context opportunities to develop and practice social and communication skills with typically-developing peers, and creating opportunities for meaningful employment

As a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) school, we provide a multi-tiered approach to address student behavior and reinforce learning skills and behaviors.

CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS

  • The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community. The school’s leadership team identified the following elements as impactful for their students.
