  • EMERGENCY DRILLS

The most important responsibility of the faculty and staff at Odenton Elementary is to keep our students safe. To that end, we regularly practice emergency procedure drills to ensure that we will be prepared when something unexpected occurs. These drills can be scary and anxiety-provoking for some of our students, and the teachers and staff do everything they can to reassure and comfort students. The resources linked below provide information that parents and caretakers can discuss with students to help prepare them for drills and actual emergencies.

    VISITORS

In order to provide a safe environment for our students, Odenton employs a secured entry, video surveillance and V-Soft identification system to monitor and verify the identity of all visitors entering the building.

Upon arrival at the building, ALL NON-STAFF VISITORS will be asked to buzz in at the call box by the main entrance (facing the main parking lot) and state their reason for entering the building. Upon entering, every visitor must report to the Main Office, provide a photo ID and wear an individualized identification sticker while in the building. Visitors in the building without a V-Soft sticker will be asked to return to the Main Office. Please remember to check out in the office when you leave the building.

FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS, STAFF AND VISITORS, IT IS CRITICAL THAT ALL VISITORS FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE. PLEASE DO NOT HOLD ENTRANCE DOORS OPEN FOR OTHERS. IF YOU ARE AT THE ENTRANCE, PLEASE DIRECT ALL VISITORS TO BUZZ IN AT THE CALL BOX.

    SCHOOL SECURITY CAMERAS

Odenton Elementary School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and exterior public portions of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call the Supervisor of School Security at 410-222-5083.

    VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECKS

AACPS is committed to providing safe and secure learning environments for all students and employees. Successful completion of a Fingerprint-Supported Background Check is required before any intern, volunteer or chaperone has unsupervised access to students either on or off school property (e.g., during the Drownproofing trip in 5th grade).  Fingerprint-supported background checks must be scheduled through the Fingerprinting Office at 410-222-5045.

Volunteers who will have supervised access to students are required to complete a Commercial Background Check. To volunteer, complete the online COMMERCIAL BACKGROUND CHECK APPLICATION.
