THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023
George T. Cromwell Elementary School
-
When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement. Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts. Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.
George T. Cromwell Elementary School's Story
-
A big part of our school’s story is found in our history. George Cromwell Elementary has been a cherished part of the Glen Burnie community for over 50 years. Founded in 1964, George Cromwell Elementary is named in memory of George T. Cromwell, Sr. for his interest in education and his unselfish efforts on behalf of the youth of Anne Arundel County. Many current parents, and even some grandparents, were once students at our school. With our deep history comes great pride. Our teachers and staff take great pride in our school; and many of our staff members have worked at George Cromwell Elementary for more than 20 years. However, even with a strong history, we are always looking towards our bright future. The stakeholders that take such pride in our school also want it to be vibrant and forward thinking. Innovation and new ideas are welcomed.
George Cromwell Elementary is a small neighborhood school and has been the mainstay of our Glen Burnie community since 1964. Our enrollment area is a wide cross-section of Glen Burnie and Ferndale between Crain Highway and Aviation Boulevard, and we currently have 320 students enrolled in grades 1-5. Our pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students attend Ferndale Early Education Center to alleviate overcrowding.

In 2017, we were designated for a full revitalization, and in the Fall of 2018 we opened a newly constructed section of the building that included a brand new, state-of-the-art gym, cafeteria, Global Studies Room and music room. In January 2019, a new Media Center and the primary grade classrooms were completed. By the end of the 2019-20 school year, our existing building will have been fully renovated and revitalized.
George Cromwell Elementary has implemented an Enhancing Elementary Excellence (EEE) program, with a Global Studies theme. Our EEE Global Studies program connects our students to the world around them and brings world issues to our classrooms, giving our students the opportunity to develop a stronger sense of responsibility as global citizens. As a result, our students will grow into more independent thinkers and use their own set of unique skills and abilities to interact with their classmates and teachers.
George Cromwell Elementary also participates in the Arts Empowered Minds Initiative (AEMI) program that is utilized to increase access to high-quality arts-integrated learning opportunities for students and teachers. We participate in smART residencies through Young Audiences that invite artists to create hands-on experiences for students. Through AEMI, our teachers increase their capacity to use arts integration in the classroom. We know that learning through the arts engages students at high levels, which correlates greatly with increases in achievement across the disciplines.
