THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Germantown Elementary School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Germantown Elementary's School Story

  • Germantown Elementary School was one of the first schools established in the Annapolis area and is currently educating over 560 students in the fourth generation of our community school. It is our pleasure to welcome these students each day, promoting academic excellence for all of our lifelong learners. Our Title I school is located at the center of a unique and diverse community, representing 60% English Language Learners. While 75% of our students live below the poverty line, the remaining percentage live well above median income. In addition, Germantown is a Primary Years International Baccalaureate World School, teaching Italian language throughout the week to all students. Educators, students, and parents consistently engage in regular opportunities for reflection and growth to strive to be global citizens who make the world a better place through positive action.

Our dedicated staff focuses on caring relationships, built on mutual respect and trust with students, parents and community stakeholders.  Our school has fewer than 1% formal discipline referrals, which reflects our positive environment. We appreciate and celebrate our school diversity and strive to provide authentic, quality learning engagements. Our instructional coaching model and professional collaboration structure support the professional growth of our highly effective teaching staff as we work together to close the achievement gap and prepare all students to become lifelong learners.

Our staff and students work with additional intervention supports for both our approaching and highly able students. We closely monitor individual student progress and continuous growth by setting individual learning goals, analyzing data, and providing feedback to accelerate learning and take actions to create a supportive learning environment for ALL students. Students are reflective in their learning process and share their progress with parents during our student-led conferences throughout the year.

Staff provide a friendly greeting to students upon their arrival each day. As students enter the classroom, they enjoy our school-wide free breakfast and begin with a community circle activity to cultivate caring relationships. Students and staff  comprise 10 school “Crews” that focus on team building, cultivating strong relationships and developing good character. To cultivate the strengths of all learners, we integrate the arts in all content areas, focus on the inquiry cycle for deeper connections to learning, provide before and after school interest clubs, as well as in school and after school academic intervention opportunities.  We plan many family events with the partnership of our PTA such as play dates, movie nights, math and reading nights, musical concerts and even a talent show. We seek to develop all students’ talents throughout the varied events and clubs offered at our school.
