THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Central Elementary School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Central Elementary's School Story

  • Central Elementary (CES) is a community school located in Edgewater, MD and home to 600 students, a dedicated faculty, and an engaging parent community. We work together to provide a safe, nurturing climate where learning is our top priority and students are challenged to excel in all areas.  Each day, the staff at CES create an engaging learning environment within the classroom, as well as a variety of extracurricular opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents, to pursue their interests, and to extend their learning.  Our students enjoy coming into a school environment where teachers and staff demonstrate kindness, caring, and genuine interest to their needs as individuals.  

    Opened in 1972, Central Elementary has served the Edgewater community for 48 years.  The original building was constructed as an open space environment, consisting of 3 learning pods centered around an open Media Center.  In recent years, our school has been upgraded to include classroom enclosures and the addition of a classroom wing designed for Kindergarten learners.  During the 2012 – 2013 school year, Central Elementary engaged in the redistricting process.  Prior to this process our student enrollment was in excess of 800 students; and since completing this process, our enrollment has decreased by 200 students.  This significant decrease in our student population has naturally brought about changes in teaching and support staff.

    At Central Elementary, we are proud to meet the needs of a diverse learning population.  In addition to serving a growing population of English Learners (EL) and their families, CES also meets the needs of students in regional programs for Autism and Alternate Curriculum Classrooms.   Most recently, we are proud to have recertified our Maryland Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) award which recognizes PK-12 Maryland Public Schools which have gifted and talented education programs that are aligned with Maryland’s Criteria for Excellence.  In addition, we are proud that our Green School Club, in conjunction with environmental learning throughout our school, successfully recertified our Maryland Green School status during the 2017-2018 school year and for a third time. 

    Upon arriving at Central Elementary, students and families are greeted by a welcoming staff who make use of school and community resources to embrace students and maximize learning opportunities. On a daily basis, students in our classrooms are engaged in lessons planned to foster creativity, to provide opportunities for collaboration, as well as to require students to justify and extend their reasoning.   Dedicated teachers work to create a rigorous learning environment and provide all students with access to opportunities and experiences that will not only develop knowledge of content, but also develop critical thinking.  In addition, students are regularly provided opportunities to engage in cultural arts instruction designed to develop creativity and allow students to showcase their amazing talents.  Examples of this talent are often showcased around our building, as well as in community art shows and performances.    

    The Central Elementary staff are committed to the school and community. Teachers’ dedication is evidenced by their participation and on-going commitment to professional growth. Our highly qualified staff includes six Nationally Board-Certified Teachers.  Furthermore, as we provide a safe and nurturing learning environment, we are fortunate to partner with an engaging group of parents and community members.  These stakeholders give of their time and talents to support the needs of our students, and they serve as role models demonstrating that they value the educational experience that students receive at CES .
