THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023
Crofton Woods Elementary School
-
When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement. Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts. Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.
Crofton Woods Elementary's School Story
-
Crofton Woods Elementary School is located at the heart of Crofton, just past the town gates. Opened in 1970, it was the second of the five Crofton elementary schools to be built. Crofton Woods was originally constructed with an “open floor plan” during the height of the Open Classrooms movement. Crofton Woods currently has spacious, separated classrooms that emanate from a large, inviting, and open media center.
The Crofton community was a planned community, which predominantly consists of single-family homes with a few townhouse communities. Our community continues to be economically stable and serves students in a large area that runs from Route 3 on the east to Route 450 on the south, including much of the Crofton “triangle.” Currently, Crofton Woods is part of the South River Cluster in Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS); however, students from Crofton Woods will attend the new Crofton High School, which is under construction. Our student enrollment has grown over the last 8 years, with over 760 students in attendance. Our school is under construction at this writing, and we look forward to a new wing with an additional 6 classrooms that will open in the 2020-21 school year. Our parents are often involved, and the school enjoys a generous PTA which supports the school through fundraising, event planning, and teacher support.

Crofton Woods continues to be one of the highest-performing schools in Anne Arundel County, with a significant number of students identified to participate in the Advanced Learner Programs (ALPs). Our staff is uniquely equipped to work with students at all levels of ability, from students with significant special needs to students who require a high level of academic challenge. Crofton Woods prides itself on meeting all students' needs and is actively pursuing recognition as an Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) school from the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education. We also have highly effective intervention strategies and Special Education programs; both are designed to help close the achievement gap for all learners and allow all individual students to meet with success.
This school has always been an innovative learning environment with the vision of “developing a respectful, responsible community; providing engaging experiences; and inspiring tomorrow’s leaders to discover, integrate, and grow.” That vision is encapsulated in the acronym DIG (Discover, Integrate, Grow). Crofton Woods became an official Arts Integration school in 2012, and Arts Integration is an important way that we help students access learning through multiple pathways and build engagement in all learning. We have many opportunities for integrating the arts including our special DIG days when students participate in multiple arts-integrated experiences across the school.
