When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Lothian Elementary School has proudly served the South County Community for over 60 years. Whether a bus or car rider, students arrive to a tranquil, rural environment and enter the doors of a beautiful, energy-efficient facility, which opened in 2014. As our 500 students make their way through the light-filled hallways, they are greeted with warm welcomes by staff.  Each start to the day shows how relationships are valued as well as the dedication and commitment of the Lothian faculty. Supportive relationships are in action every day through the safe, nurturing environment staff provides, the recognition of positive behaviors and academic thinking and efforts, and the differentiation of instruction to meet student needs.

Lothian Elementary has a strong sense of community. This is evident through the parents and grandparents who also attended Lothian in their youth and the multitude of volunteers and community members who give their time each day. The sense of community can be seen in the partnerships and programs that connect outside the walls of the school and felt in the rapport among staff, students, and families. Veteran teachers, new teachers, and teacher interns work collaboratively each and every day to support our diverse group of students.
