THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Shady Side Elementary School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Shady Side Elementary's School Story

  • Shady Side Elementary is a dynamic and diverse community, committed to developing the whole child to create caring leaders in a progressive and technological society. Our mission is to foster academic excellence and support personal growth and ethics through collaboration, flexibility, and shared responsibility. Our rural location on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in southern Anne Arundel County provides opportunities and a maritime culture that are unique to our community. Many families have lived here for more than 300 years, but there is also an influx of new families moving to Shady Side who are providing an increasingly rich diversity for our school community. Presently, Shady Side serves approximately 460 scholars. We pride ourselves on being a closely-knit community with our PTO, area churches, and the surrounding community being very involved in our school.

There are now four Nationally Board Certified Teachers as part of our highly-qualified staff. We serve students and families from Pre-K through 5th grade with quality differentiated curricula and numerous after school clubs and activities. Our clubs and activities include: Homework Club, 24 Club, Dance Company, STEM Club, Online Book Club, Oyster Club, Girls On the Run, Clay Club, Baking and Cake Decorating Class.

Shady Side Elementary is enriched by being the only South County school that provides Enhancing Elementary Excellence (Triple E): Arts and Humanities instruction, an interdisciplinary approach with a curriculum that emphasizes connections and collaboration. As a result of this program, our students see themselves as creative artists, evaluating their own and others’ work. Evidence of the benefits of the Arts and Humanities program is displayed throughout the entire school.

When students arrive at Shady Side each day, they are greeted by enthusiastic staff members in front of the building, throughout the hallways, and in each classroom. Adults throughout the building take care to intentionally greet every student who enters the building. Students start the day in their classrooms by watching daily live morning announcements that are hosted by 5th grade students. In addition to celebrating student successes on the morning announcements, we also recognize a variety of achievements and share information about the diversity of our community. The front office staff is committed to knowing all students and families, in order to increase trust and build relationships from the time families register their children to attend Shady Side
