THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023
Folger McKinsey Elementary School
-
When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement. Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts. Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.
Folger McKinsey Elementary's School Story
-
Nestled in Severna Park, Folger McKinsey Elementary School has been a community school since 1958. We currently educate over 600 students in grades K-5 from several communities in Severna Park located east of Governor Ritchie Highway (Rt. 2) . Our mission at Folger McKinsey is to provide rigorous differentiated instruction to all students while maintaining a safe and engaging learning environment. Our community is proud that Folger McKinsey Elementary School has worked hard and earned State and National Blue Ribbon status, is a Maryland Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School, a Wellness School of Distinction, and a Maryland Sustainable Green School.
Folger McKinsey has historically had an active parent community. The deep-rooted tradition of partnering with parents and community members enables the learning experience to extend beyond the academic day. To allow more students to participate in enrichment opportunities, the school has collaborated with the PTO to schedule various before and after school clubs and activities that focus on developing students academically, socially, and physically. Examples of clubs and activities include our Outdoor Classroom Club (OC2), Hooting Helpers Club, Girls on the Run, and Hero Boys Club.

With this lens on instruction and strong partnerships with the community, we recognize the need to ensure that social-emotional capacities grow in tandem with academics. Collaborating with our PTO, staff members were trained in The Positivity Project, a program that teaches students to recognize and cultivate their character strengths. Throughout the school year, character strengths are introduced to students, and resources are provided to staff, students and parents to highlight the various strengths. Empowering students to build positive relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others allows us to cultivate a cohesive school community. Our goal is for our school community to develop the “other people matter mindset,” which recognizes the importance of relationships in overall health and well-being.
