THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023
Southgate Elementary School
-
When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement. Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts. Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.
Southgate Elementary's School Story
-
Southgate Elementary School, located in Glen Burnie, MD was established and approved by Anne Arundel County Public Schools in 1968. It was renovated/revitalized for its current state in 2008. At Southgate Elementary, diversity is invited, nurtured and celebrated! Students at Southgate take pride in their school and can take action to positively impact the school community. In 2018, Southgate Elementary School was reauthorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. We offer our approximately 820 students in Pre-K through fifth grade the Primary Years Programme (PYP) here in the Old Mill cluster, and we are continuously growing. We have a diverse population including 40% African American, 40% White, 10% Hispanic; and the remaining 10% include 4 ethnicities. Our diversity creates opportunities for students to learn about a wide variety of cultures and experiences. As an IB school, we aim to build relationships, rigor, and readiness through inquiry teaching and learning, and student ownership of their learning. The 2018-19 school year will be our fourth year as a Targeted Title I School. We value the additional resources/staff that our students, staff and parents receive through this federal grant.

The Southgate staff is recognized as highly collaborative and known for building positive relationships with all stakeholders while growing their PYP instructional capacity. The teachers and staff come with a wealth of experiences and knowledge, and they continue to be lifelong learners to support our students' learning journey. Our staff returns year after year, which helps reinforce relationships among all students and families. The families in our Southgate community are engaged in ensuring that the children are members of a warm, nurturing school learning environment.
Southgate Elementary is more than a schoolhouse. It has a “small school feel” providing a safe, collaborative environment where children enter pre-kindergarten and leave fifth grade with a greater understanding of citizenship, open-mindedness and respect for cultural diversity. Through rigorous teaching, high expectations and a partnership with our community, we strive to create lifelong learners who will be active participants in a global society.
