THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Central Middle School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Central Middle's School Story

  • Central Middle School is a STEM magnet school that has served the Edgewater community for 42 years. Our enrollment has grown from 1127 in the 2015-2016 school year to the current projected enrollment of 1300 students for the 2019-2020 school year. Most of our in-area students (approximately 33%) come from Davidsonville Elementary School, and our other feeder elementary schools are Edgewater Elementary, Central Elementary and Mayo Elementary. The student attendance rate is excellent, with 94-95% of students in attendance daily. The inclusion of 150 to 180 out-of-area students in our STEM program and increased housing development contribute to the variety of stories that make up our student and staff population.

Our staff includes 9 alumni who attended Central Middle School, which provides us with some first hand knowledge of our school’s history. In addition, several staff members live in the area, and have children that previously or currently attend CMS. While the majority of our staff have worked at CMS for less than 10 years, we have numerous staff members who have worked here for more than 10 years, several having worked at CMS for over 20 years and 1 teacher who has worked here for 36 years.

Through the support of all stakeholders, Central Middle School achieved the highest rating of five stars from the state of Maryland. On 2018 state-wide testing, 76.2% of our students scored in the highest two categories for Math and Language Arts while our STEM students continue to participate in culminating Changemaker Projects that enhance our school.

Our recently-earned designation as a Project Lead the Way school has been achieved through the dedication of our teacher leadership, parent support, and student members in the Technology Student Association. Our AVID program also works to support all students. While AVID is designed to benefit students in the “academic middle,” our AVID site coordinator works with our staff to share the activities and strategies for the benefit of all students. The AVID students also provide targeted mentoring and tutoring to students through teacher observations and requests.
