THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Monarch Academy Glen Burnie

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Monarch Academy - Glen Burnie School Story

  • Monarch Academy (MAGB), the first public charter school in Anne Arundel County, was founded in 2009 in Glen Burnie, Maryland as a partnership between The Children’s Guild and Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS). Originally only serving three grades, MAGB now serves 677 students in grades K-8. Students join our school community through a lottery system and hail from all parts of Anne Arundel County, resulting in a geographically, racially, and ethnically diverse student population.  Though we are an atypical school building and location, we have many founding families that continue to be active members of our school community as their children matriculate, many staff members with children in our school, and a strong emphasis on student and stakeholder voice, thus creating the shared traditions, investment, and continuity more typical of a neighborhood school.

While our teachers and administrators are employed and supervised by AACPS, The Children’s Guild is considered our “operator.” They provide the vision for and management of our art-enriched facility and ensure that we sustain a student-centered, positive school culture. Our instructional pedagogy is shaped in partnership with EL Education, which supports experiential learning that requires students to not only master concepts but also create authentic, high quality work. This process engages students in their learning as they deeply study a topic, explore with experts, and become experts through their research and experiences.
