THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

South River High School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

South River High's School Story

  • South River High School (SRHS), home of the Seahawks, located in Edgewater, Maryland is one of 12 comprehensive Anne Arundel County public high schools.  Currently the largest high school with a population of approximately 2200, SRHS for its size, maintains a small school feel.

Edgewater is a suburb approximately five miles southwest of Annapolis on the south side of the South River and bordered by the communities of Mayo to the east and Riva to the west. Other communities that feed into the school include Davidsonville and Crofton.  Because of their proximity, these communities are within commuting distance of the Baltimore—Washington metropolitan area. As a result, many of our parents work in federal, state, and local government jobs; work in large and small corporations located in the area; are self-employed; or work in many of the area’s local businesses. Several of the teachers and staff are products of the school system, including South River High.

We are proud to be known as “the caring” school, undertaking numerous causes and opportunities to help others. The school is a community that celebrates and benefits from all cultures within the student population, as well as from the generosity of local businesses and community groups that support the school.  The PTSO is very active, eagerly supporting the educational arena providing supplies and awards, in addition to recognizing the staff for their commitment to education, and assisting with maintaining a positive rapport with all stakeholders. Due to the efforts of the PTSO and local support, the auditorium, athletic stadium, and gymnasium have been renovated and improved.

South River has been recognized for multiple achievements, including US News and World Report Magazine citing South River as the number one school in Anne Arundel County, and by Baltimore Magazine as one of the top high schools in the Baltimore/Washington Metropolitan area.  SRHS was the first high school in Anne Arundel County to be named a Maryland Blue Ribbon School and has been recognized as an Advanced Placement School of Distinction by the Anne Arundel County Board of Education. In addition, South River leads all Anne Arundel County Schools in the number of AP exams given per year, with  71% of the 2019 senior class earning college credit with their AP scores.  Of our 2,164 AP Exams taken by 951 students, 50% resulted in a score of 3 or higher, with 28% of students scoring a 4 or 5.  South River is the only school in Anne Arundel County offering the AP Capstone Program and is home to the Maryland State Model Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math Magnet Program (STEM).  Other programs offered by the school include Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID);  Global Communication and Public Affairs Signature (GC & PA); Project Lead the Way (PLTW); Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC); and, an on-location site for Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) Early College Access Program.
