THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Marley Glen School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Marley Glen's School Story

  • Marley Glen School is a public, separate, day school that serves approximately 150 students. Our school provides a comprehensive half-day pre-school program for students with or without disabilities and full-day programs for students with moderate to severe developmental and special needs, ages 5-21. 

    Our school’s unique environment is steeped in collaboration and a commitment to our community. Since 1972 when we opened our doors, we’ve been dedicated to serving children with special needs.

    How and What Our Students Learn: 

    • All students focus on increasing independence and communication skills, using Common Core State Standards. 
    • A typical school day consists of literacy centers, small- and whole-group instruction, mathematics, social studies or science, and journal writing. Reading is embedded across all subject areas. Teachers model and use CORE word vocabulary to assist in asking questions. 
    • Our students learn through doing. Students are empowered to learn across environments by integrating literacy, communication, and independent skills throughout their day. These practices lead to opportunities for meaningful employment. 
    • Community Based Instructional opportunities are part of the curriculum for students in grades 1-12.
    • Students visit various restaurants, retail shops, and grocery stores where they can use their communication and independent living skills to order, shop and make purchases. 
    • High school students participate in Enclave, where they travel to job sites twice a week to learn and practice job skills.
    • Additional opportunities are provided within the schoolhouse to prepare students for community jobs.
    • Students participate in cultural arts consisting of physical education, art, media and music. 
    • Every Body Moves: Students take part in Unified Sports after school, participating in activities including bowling and bocce. Our elementary-aged students join the Marley Invitational, where students from five neighboring schools enjoy a morning of sports and activities together. The physical education teachers provide additional activities throughout the week in our motor room. This year, our first-ever dance team will be assembled and perform at the Anne Arundel County Dance festival.

    Our Talented Team: 

    • All classroom teachers are special educators who use Unique curriculum along with the Common Core Connectors to meet students’ needs.
    • In-house certified Movement Opportunities Via Education (M.O.V.E.) instructors provide opportunities for students to increase their physical activity. 
    • Service providers deliver therapy to our students depending upon their needs. Therapies include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision therapy, music therapy, and aquatics therapy. 
    • Our wonderful supporting team includes school nurses, a social worker, a crisis interventionist, paraeducators, and additional adult support staff. 

    Technologies and Tools:

    • We provide assistive technologies to each student to enhance their ability to communicate independently. 
    • Personalization: Students and teachers select the technologies and tools that they prefer through a screening process.
    • Consistency: Our students use the same technology throughout their day to help build their abilities and capacity to utilize their communication system. 

    Our Community Spirit:

    • Our very active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) welcomes everyone. The PTO hosts events throughout the school year, including Breakfast with Santa and a Spring Egg Hunt. 
    • Our community partnerships enrich the school culture. For example, Northrop Grumman and V-Link build and modify specialized bicycles for students. 
    • Special events provide families and friends with opportunities to join in the school spirit. Bowling night, Craft Fairs, and the Santa Shop are among the favorite evening and weekend events.
