Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Jacobsville is proud to offer the Enhancing Elementary Excellence (EEE) program, in which all students receive weekly instruction in the Spanish language and cultures of the world through fun projects and experiences. As an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) Candidate School, Jacobsville develops open-minded scholars by exploring multiple cultural and ethnic perspectives. Through inquiry and the conceptual exploration of units of study, students will learn to value diverse perspectives and develop international mindedness. In addition, participating in IB PYP at Jacobsville allows students a unique opportunity to experience the full IB continuum, if they choose to move on to the Programs of Choice Magnet IB Middle Years Programme.

Jacobsville has implemented a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) program, which is an example of a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) centered on social behavior. Our focus is on explicitly teaching and positively reinforcing expected student behaviors. Jacobsville Jaguars R.O.A.R. (Respectful, Organized, Achieve, and Responsible) with pride. As a 2017 Maryland School of Character recipient, our school displays a commitment to teaching and reinforcing the values of a global citizen and 21st Century learner. We look for and celebrate positive examples of student actions that reflect our IB PYP learner profiles. As a 2017 Maryland Green School, our students and staff focus on beautifying the school and improving the physical landscape, recycling efforts, and more intentional use of materials as we promote ways we can all actively care for our planet. We are also home to a unique specialty site including three Alternative Curriculum Classes (ACC) and a self-contained feeder classroom which supports students with intensive special education needs in a nurturing and supportive learning environment.
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS
