THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Mayo Elementary School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Mayo Elementary's School Story

  • Originally founded in 1936 and situated in the heart of the Mayo peninsula overlooking the South River, Mayo Elementary School has always been a small community school.  The Mayo Peninsula is vast and mighty, and Mayo Elementary has served many generations of families over the years. Our school was rebuilt in 2005; and we currently serve communities including Beverly Beach, Ponders Cove, Turkey Point, Triton Woods, and many more. Our 320 students are welcomed to school daily by our devoted staff. We are proud to serve!

Our goal at Mayo Elementary is to teach all of our students to understand, to appreciate, and to value diversity. Diversity and inclusion have become a focus for us through the lens of our School Improvement Plan. Most recently, we sought input from our staff, families, and community stakeholders to create new Vision and Mission statements for our school. Our Mayo Elementary School community is very proud of our school, our mission, and our vision.

The mission of the Mayo School Community is “to provide our children with a nurturing learning environment emphasizing academic excellence, leading students to become responsible citizens and successful 21st century learners.” Our vision is that “we are a very dedicated learning community and will push forward and persevere.”

We are so very proud to be honored as a National Blue Ribbon School, a Maryland Blue Ribbon School, and a recertified Maryland Green School. In addition, we continue to provide wellness programs for our staff and students as we work towards earning a Wellness School of Distinction Award. Recent wellness programs include “Fitness February” for students and staff, and Yoga sessions incorporated into Professional Development.

Each year, we award a 5th grade student with the coveted  “Mayo Mallard” award. One of our teachers earned that award when she attended Mayo Elementary as a student!
