Pershing Hill Elementary School

Key Challenges to Student Success

  • The students who attend Pershing Hill Elementary School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood.  While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Pershing Hill Elementary, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.

This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.

  • Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges

    • PARCC/MCAP Scores - Mathematics
    • PARCC/MCAPScores - English/Language Arts

    Key Challenge #1:  PARCC/MCAP Scores - Mathematics

Our students come from a variety of states and school systems with differing instructional standards and assessment tools.  In a short period of time, we must prepare our students for Maryland’s annual school assessment (MCAP, Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program). (Indicator 6)

  • Non-Traditional Socio-Economic Challenges

    • Student Mobility

    Key Challenge #2:  Student Mobility

Student mobility issues related to our location on a military post results in a loss of 25-33% of our students every year.  The turnover of students impacts our instructional program, as many of our new students and parents need time to adjust to the Maryland teaching and learning standards. (Indicator 6)

  • HISTORICAL SCHOOL & COMMUNITY CHALLENGES THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THE WRITING OF THIS SCHOOL'S STORY

    • Significant changes over time in student/community demographics

Key Challenge #3:  Significant changes over time in student/community demographics

Successful school communities benefit from having consistent family and community support.  Our parents are involved and very supportive of our school, however, short-term military assignments often result in annual turnover in volunteers and PTA membership.  (Indicator 1 & 2
