Arnold Elementary School

Key Challenges to Student Success

  • The students who attend Arnold Elementary School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood.  While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Arnold Elementary, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.

This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.

  • Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges

    • Attendance Rates
    • Discipline Rates
    • Numbers of 504 students
    • Numbers of FARMS students

    • Quarterly Assessments scores - Mathematics
    • PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
    • PARCC Scores - English/Language Arts (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)

    Key Challenge #1:  Social-Emotional Learning

After analyzing the survey data more closely, it was determined that our students could benefit from additional character education, including growing student empathy and perseverance.  In support of Indicator 1 of the AACPS Strategic Plan, we aim to increase the percentage of students, families, staff, and partners who report feeling like a valuable member of the school or school system community.  In addition, we strive to increase the percentage of students who report that AACPS staff care for and support them (Indicator 2).  Our goal is to create a more positive learning environment, as indicated on 2018-2019 climate surveys. Arnold Elementary will build teacher capacity to respond positively when students are not meeting expected behaviors. Our character education program focuses on a monthly goal, which improves growth mindset, positive thinking, risk taking, and being respectful students.  This increased focus on social-emotional skills and learning increases student opportunities for success.

Key Challenge #2:   English/Language Arts and Mathematics Assessments

With regard to student achievement on the most recent standardized assessment data (PARCC), we have many celebrations. The following percentages reflect students scoring in PLD 4 and 5 in Language Arts and Math:

Students Scoring in Performance Level Descriptor (PLD) 4 and 5

Our focus during the 2019-2020 continues to be increasing student achievement for all.

Our focus will be to increase the number of students with special education services scoring a 4 or 5 on PARCC/MCAP in language arts from 17% to 25% and from 30% to 40% in math.
