Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program philosophy, standards, and practices provide the structure for our students’ educational growth. The philosophy promotes reflection, tolerance, inclusion, and action. This is visible in how our students think about themselves and others and is an important element of the Manor View culture.
Fort Meade is designated as a compassionate assignment for military families with exceptional needs. This means our team of general educators, related service providers, and special educators are equipped to support families and each child’s individual needs. Our goal is to provide a robust education for students in a safe, caring, and supportive learning environment. Knowing that many of our students will not stay with us for their entire elementary career, we strive to ensure that while they are with us they feel connected to our community, build their academic skills, and acquire solid learning behaviors that will benefit them in all future endeavors.

For the past several years, we’ve used a positive student behavior program called “1-2-3 Magic”. It’s based on a counting strategy that supports reflection and student agency. The system provides a consistency of behavior expectations for students and allows them to recognize and correct behavioral choices on the spot. Communication between school and home is a key component of our approach.
The culture within our school is warm, welcoming, and inclusive. With a high mobility rate, we routinely welcome new students and families. Sadly, we also say farewell to those transitioning to a new assignment. We strive to help all members of our school community feel connected and cared for. We laugh together, we learn together, we smile together, and we support each other. Our Manor View Eagles SOAR (Safe, Organized, Accountable, Responsible)!
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS
