West Meade Early Education Center

Key Challenges to Student Success

  • The students who attend West Mead Early Education Center are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood.  While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at West Meade, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.

This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.

  • Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges

    • Attendance Rates
    • Discipline Rates
    • Special Education student enrollment

  • Non-Traditional Socio-Economic Challenges

    • Student Mobility
    • Families in Crisis (mental, physical emotional, financial)

Key Challenge # 1 Student Mobility

As with all schools, there are certain challenges to our students’ success. At West Meade, the greatest impact on student performance is a result of student mobility and our transient student population. For the 2017-18 school year, West Meade had high student mobility in both Kindergarten and Pre-K. While there may be little observable impact when students withdraw from West Meade because their family is transferred to another state mid-school year, the opposite is true when new students move into the community and enroll. Students may come from a state that does not require full-time Kindergarten instruction, and these new students may not have previous knowledge of the alphabet, counting, or basic phonics. As a result, classroom teachers must redirect instruction to teach new students the skills the other students have been learning.  Consequently, our teachers differentiate lesson plans and activities to provide rigorous learning for the larger group while working to bring those without background learning on board quickly. New students enroll frequently throughout the school year, and many classes lack consistent enrollment.

Key Challenge #2  Families in Crisis

Another key challenge for the West Meade EEC community is the trauma that some of our students experience at home that manifests itself in school. Many of our military families have unique challenges and needs concerning deployment of a parent, mental health concerns, and financial hardship. It is very difficult for many of our students and family members when one or both parents are deployed to other countries or to war zones.  Children who miss their parents and do not understand why or where they have gone may face greater challenges in coming to school ready to learn.   Some families struggle with personal crises such as significant health issues of one family member that impacts the attendance and emotional health of students.  When a family member is ill the student may experience trauma due to the stress family members feel in dealing with an injury or illness.
