Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
At Piney Orchard Elementary, our motto is “Better Together”. Over the past ten years, our school has emphasized collaboration and a focus on recognizing and nurturing the individual gifts and talents of each member of our school community. Recognizing the importance of addressing the social-emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of our students, the Piney Orchard Elementary staff strives to provide opportunities for our students to grow in all domains. The culture of the school and the needs of various students and student groups are reflected upon regularly, with modifications and accommodations made as needed.
From listening to and working with the Piney Orchard Elementary School families, the staff has determined that programming for advanced learners is valued highly. The staff will continue to create opportunities for all students to have access to accelerated learning strategies. The POES community has demonstrated an interest in wellness and care for the environment, and institutional practices have been established to facilitate student growth in those areas.
The strength of the Piney Orchard Elementary school community lies in the ability to bring a diverse school family together to collaborate and work towards a common goal. To measure progress towards these goals, data such as test scores and climate surveys is collected and analyzed regularly. Relying upon the talents of each member of the community, the POES school family works together to help all students to do their best and to grow to their fullest potential.
