Key Challenges to Student Success
-
The students who attend Benfield Elementary School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood. While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Benfield Elementary, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.
This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.

Key Challenge #1: Attendance
Benfield Elementary School recognizes that regular attendance is necessary for the academic and emotional success of students. Trend data shows that between 3-5% of our students are chronically absent during the school year. In addition, we have students who are frequently picked up from school for an early dismissal, which interrupts the consistent routine of our school days. We recognize that any time missed from school creates gaps in our students’ knowledge that can impact their ability to master grade-level skills and expectations. Our attendance team monitors attendance and communicates with parents the importance of students attending school on a regular basis. Our school nurse does an excellent job reaching out to parents and offering support in the health and well-being of our students. She also does a great job educating parents on when it is appropriate to send students to school or stay home.

Non-Traditional Socio-Economic Challenges
- Socio-Economic Issues (employment, income levels, housing costs)
Key Challenge #2: Social Emotional Learning
Our students excel and achieve tremendous success in many areas, however, the challenge some students face at Benfield Elementary is in finding a healthy balance between high academic performance and perfection. While we recognize that our students come to school every day ready to learn and are engaged in their classes, we also know that they need support for their social-emotional health and well being. We recognize that our students are very conscientious about being successful in school, and often put more pressure on themselves than what is necessary. This pressure can impact our students social emotional well-being. Our goal is to provide Benfield students with social-emotional skills to help them navigate everyday academic and social challenges. Our staff is dedicated to continue to support students in their journey towards academic and social-emotional growth. We want our students to learn healthy ways to manage stress, and to learn how to balance academic expectations in a well-rounded life. Through social-emotional learning, our students will develop self-awareness, self-control and interpersonal skills to be successful at school and in life.

HISTORICAL SCHOOL & COMMUNITY CHALLENGES THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THE WRITING OF THIS SCHOOL'S STORY
- Socio-economic community issues (employment, income levels, housing costs)
Key Challenge #3: Lack of Access to Community Programs
Our students are not always able to access extracurricular activities in their communities. While some students are able to access weekend and outside of school activities, other students might not have access to those opportunities due to parent work-schedules, lack of transportation or cost. We want all of our students to benefit from a rich variety of extracurricular opportunities, so they have equitable access to pursuing and growing their passions. In order to provide our students with opportunities beyond the academic schedule, we have partnered with our PTA to provide before and after school club activities. We have students who participate in Girls on the Run, Chess Club, STEM Science Club, Dance Team, and theatre, to name a few. Our students benefit greatly for these clubs.
