Strategic Plan Indicators
-
After each school leadership team reflected on its school culture, community, and the key contributing factors to student growth, they used this information to select the Strategic Plan Indicators that would have the greatest positive impact for their students. Each school was directed to select two to six indicators on which to focus during the 2018-19 school year. Certainly, we all know that if we focus narrowly and deeply, we are more likely to realize positive results. The indicators that this school’s leadership team selected are noted below.

Strategic Journey
-
Throughout the next 3 years, schools will focus on their chosen Strategic Plan Indicators as the drivers to increase student engagement and achievement within their schools. They will choose strategies to help them grow or increase within each indicator and will monitor and evaluate the student and school changes that take place along the journey. Below you will see what this school imagines their students and school to look like in 2021 after having focused and worked on their chosen indicators for three years.
Our Vision of Success: 2021
-
Within two years, Morning Meetings and Second Step Program will be fully implemented and seen as a supportive structure for building an exemplary school culture. Morning meetings are a way for students and teachers to get to know each others’ stories and to have a better understanding of each other. Social-emotional learning (SEL) will intentionally be embedded throughout all areas of the school day. Guidance lessons will continue to focus on and support the five SEL competencies as well. The school Equity Team will continue to support teachers with strategies and learning opportunities to foster a positive and respectful learning environment for all. As a Wellness School of Distinction, we will continue to focus on nurturing and developing the whole child.
After two years of focusing on learning the stories of our students and embedding SEL across all content areas, adults will see the value and positive impact of getting to know the students personally through daily Morning Meetings and Second Step. Teachers will also get to know the students better and be able to make better connections and establish relationships to help engage and support student learning and growth. They will notice that students are being more respectful towards each other which will help continue reducing behavior concerns and allow for more instructional time. Support staff will notice more respect among the students on the bus, in the cafeteria, etc.

Teachers will consistently be utilizing rubrics and conferencing with students to help improve and strengthen their writing skills across all content areas. Ongoing collaborative planning will support teachers’ growth in understanding the expectations of the rubrics and how to utilize them effectively with students. Analyzing student writing using the rubrics will help teachers identify teaching points on which to focus during conferencing. Conferencing will provide feedback to help students deepen and enrich their writing skills so that they can clearly and concisely share their thinking. The students’ writing will be displayed and recognized using writing portfolios that show personal growth over a period of time.
By the spring of 2020, students will use rubrics to help them monitor their own progress and understand what constitutes mastery for their written work. Older students will be using rubrics independently as our younger students learn that rubrics are a tool for success. Students will understand the value of conferencing as a way to improve their writing so that they are clear and concise in their expressing themselves when writing for a variety of purposes. Students will feel confident in their ability to write clearly and concisely across all content areas for a variety of purposes.
We know that learning new mathematical concepts is built on a solid foundation of understanding previous concepts and skills. Classroom teachers in our primary grades (K-2nd) will continue to work on improving number fluency with our younger students. In addition, our teachers will develop and create common formative assessments to facilitate flexible grouping, giving teachers the opportunity to focus on specific grade-level standards according to student need for enrichment and re-teaching purposes. Lastly, teachers will incorporate common reading strategies in supporting problem-solving of math word problems. “Marking the text” is an active reading strategy that will aid students in cross-curricular application to identify key components in the text using strategies such as circling and underlining. Students will be more confident, comfortable, and successful at solving math word problems by utilizing common reading strategies such as “marking the text”.
