Strategic Plan Indicators
-
After each school leadership team reflected on its school culture, community, and the key contributing factors to student growth, they used this information to select the Strategic Plan Indicators that would have the greatest positive impact for their students. Each school was directed to select two to six indicators on which to focus during the 2018-19 school year. Certainly, we all know that if we focus narrowly and deeply, we are more likely to realize positive results. The indicators that this school’s leadership team selected are noted below.

Indicator 4. INCREASE THE NUMBER OF STORIES STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO SHARE ABOUT ONE ANOTHER’S LIFE EXPERIENCES
Indicator 11. INCREASE INSTRUCTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE MULTIPLE CULTURAL AND ETHNIC PERSPECTIVES
Central Middle School faculty and staff felt they had made knowing their students stories a goal for quite sometime. When assessing their efforts by completion of surveys and interdisciplinary meetings devoted to the question, "Do we know our students' stories?" the qualitative data indicated that all teacher teams had made a concerted effort to learn the stories of their students. It was observed that knowing their stories was not enough. The school climate was reflecting the intolerance evidenced in the communities at large and great efforts needed to be made in developing understanding and acceptance of people's difference and their cultures. The number of Bais Motivated Behavior incidents was increasing and our Hispanic population was increasing the number of students who were ELL and would need more support. The achievement data showed that our students with disabilities, the Hispanic students, English language learners (ELL) students, and the African American students were not performing as well as the all student group. The achievement gap was unacceptable and a greater focus was needed on closing the gaps.
On M-CAP 2018-2019 in English Language Arts the student breakdown was: All Students percentage scoring 1,2,3 was 28%; FARMS was 61%; SWD was 88%; AA/Black 40%; and Hispanic was 46%.
On M-CAP 2018-2019 in mathematics was: All Students scoring 1,2,3, was 38.2; FARMS was 71%;SWD was 90%; AA/Black was 54%; and Hispanic was 63%.

Strategic Journey
-
Throughout the next 3 years, schools will focus on their chosen Strategic Plan Indicators as the drivers to increase student engagement and achievement within their schools. They will choose strategies to help them grow or increase within each indicator and will monitor and evaluate the student and school changes that take place along the journey. Below you will see what this school imagines their students and school to look like in 2021 after having focused and worked on their chosen indicators for three years.
Our Vision of Success: 2021
-
Central Middle School is committed to better understand who we are and to share our stories by planning professional developments, creating opportunities for relationship building inside and outside the classroom, and implementing ways to better communicate. We will continually strive to find ways to build relationships at Central Middle School through 2021 and beyond. The more we know about each other, the better we are as a school community. We believe that students will say, “I enjoy coming to school everyday,” and “My experience at CMS has been great with teachers that care.” Through our efforts, adults will see a school culture where parents and students feel welcome and a part of the school. They will see compassionate students who are kind, aware, helpful, confident, independent, and empathetic.
Central Middle School has a solid history of academic success over our 42 years, yet there is always room to grow. Our academic goal at Central Middle School is to ensure every student meets or exceeds standards as achievement gaps are eliminated. To meet our growth goals by the spring of 2021, the routines and practices observed will involve descriptive feedback, productive struggle, and increasing the quality and levels of questioning. The students will see the more personal results of their Central Middle School experience and say statements, like “I am prepared for high school” and “Central Middle School has given me options and choices about where I want to be in the future.” In the spring of 2021, students will say they are valued as students and prepared to succeed in high school and beyond.
