Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture

  • Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:

    • What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
    • Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
    • How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
    • What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need?  How do we help our families receive the supports they need?

Our School Culture

  • Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.

The Chesapeake schools are deeply rooted in tradition. Home of the Cougar Cubs, our students enjoy participating in intramural sports and many are also active in and take pride in community sports teams, such as Lakeshore Football. One of the highlights of the school year is the “Dena Bowl”- the annual football game between Chesapeake High School’s football team and Northeast High School’s football team. Middle and High school students pack into the hosting school’s stadium to cheer on their school. In the spring, middle school students play the “students against substance abuse basketball game”, against our “rival” Pasadena area middle school, George Fox Middle.

We offer students a variety of clubs and activities to appeal to the various interests and talents of our students. Students are able to build connections with staff and peers through: Green Club, Chorus, Band and Instrumental Music, Dance Company, MSEA, Anime/Manga Club, Kindness Club, Girl Talk, SGA, and National Junior Honor Society( NJHS). Our Girl Talk club has been recognized in the Pasadena Voice for the mentorship and partnership the high school students provide to our students. Our NJHS participates annually in the Polar Bear Plunge in conjunction with the high school’s National Honor Society.   Additionally, our Drama Club puts on an outstanding theater production each year which draws community members from all throughout the cluster.

The PTA is very active at Chesapeake Bay Middle, and has made a positive impact on our school. Our devoted PTA helps organize assemblies and parent awareness nights to help the community understand how issues such as the opioid crisis and social media impact our students. In addition, our PTA sponsors an annual fundraiser - Race for Education. This is our only fundraiser and typically raises about $20,000 for the year to fund additional classroom needs such as teacher supplies, incentives for students, principal’s honor roll incentives, subscriptions to academic resources as well as items for staff appreciation breakfasts and luncheons.

CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS

  • The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community. The school’s leadership team identified the following elements as impactful for their students.
