Strategic Plan Indicators

  • After each school leadership team reflected on its school culture, community, and the key contributing factors to student growth, they used this information to select the Strategic Plan Indicators that would have the greatest positive impact for their students.  Each school was directed to select two to six indicators on which to focus during the 2018-19 school year.  Certainly, we all know that if we focus narrowly and deeply, we are more likely to realize positive results.  The indicators that this school’s leadership team selected are noted below.

  • 2019-2020 Strategic Plan Indicator(s) Chosen by the School - 1, 5, 6 (expand to view details)

Indicator 1. INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS, FAMILIES, STAFF, AND PARTNERS WHO REPORT FEELING LIKE A VALUABLE MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL OR SCHOOL SYSTEM COMMUNITY

Indicator 5. INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS WHO READ ON OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL BY THE END OF SECOND GRADE

Indicator 6. INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-8 WHO MEET OR EXCEED EXPECTATIONS ON STANDARDIZED READING, LANGUAGE ARTS, AND MATHEMATICS ASSESSMENTS

Strategic Journey

  • Throughout the next 3 years, schools will focus on their chosen Strategic Plan Indicators as the drivers to increase student engagement and achievement within their schools.  They will choose strategies to help them grow or increase within each indicator and will monitor and evaluate the student and school changes that take place along the journey.  Below you will see what this school imagines their students and school to look like in 2021 after having focused and worked on their chosen indicators for three years.

Our Vision of Success: 2021

  • In SY 2018-19, Monarch Academy initiated Positive Behavior and Habits (PBH) to put our Habits of Excellence (Responsibility, Perseverance, Inquiry, Collaboration, Quality, and Service and Compassion) at the forefront of our work and further our positive culture. Our PBH work uses SuperNotes to acknowledge demonstration of our Habits and specifically thank students for their work. As we progress in our work, we will continue to clarify, model, practice, and celebrate our Habits of Excellence with our students. Likewise, we will continue to seek opportunities for our families to participate meaningfully and routinely in our school community.

Monarch Academy adopted EL Education's Language Arts / Reading Skills curriculum for grades K-8 in SY 2018-19. In grades K-2 students progress as readers using a structured phonics approach to reading instruction. Full implementation of this curriculum is our goal this year. Our aim is to do this while maintaining our belief in the power of fieldwork and learning from experts so our students are fully engaged in their experience of learning.

In SY 2018-19, Monarch students in grades K-8 used the AACPS curriculum for math. We will partner these curricula with a greater focus on checking for understanding and mastery and responding instructionally to students' demonstrated needs and levels of proficiency so each child receives instruction at their level of readiness, thus providing challenge and support as needed.

    By 2020...

    • Our PBH efforts should be embedded in all staff-student and staff-staff interactions.
    • Our system of student reflection and measurement of students' Habits will be communicated in a character report card that is sent home bi-annually.
    • Students will say that their positive contributions to their classroom and school culture were recognized and valued.
    • Adult staff and guests will see our Habits of Excellence as a part of all that we do and say. They should see evidence of and be included in celebrations of students and each other. Adults in our building should feel that they are valued.
    • K-2 students will be able to read on grade level. The student should feel confident as a reader and, ideally, love reading. They should describe their classroom and our school as language rich. Adults should see our K-2 students as ready readers. They should see students grouped purposefully. They should see joy on our students' faces as they read and experience a clear sense of a strong reading culture.
    • K-8 students will perform at or above the district level of performance on math assessments and feel appropriately challenged and supported in their learning.
