Strategic Plan Indicators
-
After each school leadership team reflected on its school culture, community, and the key contributing factors to student growth, they used this information to select the Strategic Plan Indicators that would have the greatest positive impact for their students. Each school was directed to select two to six indicators on which to focus during the 2018-19 school year. Certainly, we all know that if we focus narrowly and deeply, we are more likely to realize positive results. The indicators that this school’s leadership team selected are noted below.

Strategic Journey
-
Throughout the next 3 years, schools will focus on their chosen Strategic Plan Indicators as the drivers to increase student engagement and achievement within their schools. They will choose strategies to help them grow or increase within each indicator and will monitor and evaluate the student and school changes that take place along the journey. Below you will see what this school imagines their students and school to look like in 2021 after having focused and worked on their chosen indicators for three years.
Our Vision of Success: 2021
-
South River is committed to continuing implementation of two new programs and initiatives so that more students feel they are cared for and belong to our school community: Positive Referral Program and Student Voice Committee. Additionally, we will continue Student of the Month Recognition, Student Positive Postcards, and PBIS.
The Positive Referral Program (PRP) focuses on recognizing, encouraging, and motivating low- and mid-level students who might not receive recognition or awards through academic, athletic, or extra-curricular achievements. Students receive a PRP certificate from their teacher for [improved] attendance, NEST participation, academic improvement, kindness/character, good spirit, helping others, etc. and also are entered in a drawing for a prize at the end of each month. [Indicator 2].
Our Student Voice Committee, comprised of students who otherwise may not feel they have a voice in our school, meet with the Principal to discuss concerns and to generate solutions. Students on the committee are those who are in a CAT-South program, receive special education services, English Language Learners, non-athletes, and non-leaders in school clubs or organizations. These students were identified by administration, counselors, PPW, and teachers. The committee’s focus is to ensure all students feel like they belong and can work towards solutions to help students feel cared for and valued in our community. [Indicator 2]
The Student of the Month Program recognizes students for a variety of reasons: academic, most improved, leadership, going above and beyond, helping others, and much more. These students are nominated by departments. Each department has a student of the month. To celebrate these achievements, a Student of the Month Breakfast is held monthly to recognize and celebrate these students with their parents.

Student Positive Postcards started two years ago and has proven to be one of the best things we have done. Every Friday, teachers and staff are provided with one or more postcards that are addressed to parents of a student they feel has made strides who otherwise would not be recognized. That staff member writes a note about how impressed they are with the student’s progress or achievement and mails it. We have received a great deal of positive feedback from parents about these postcards and they have made a difference with some of our struggling students.
When students feel safe and supported at school, it becomes easier to develop a desire to attend school outside for reasons other than academic. As our school grows in its ability to care for students and ensure that each person feels they belong, an improvement in attendance and involvement will be evident, which should affect other areas such as academic performance and behavior issues. As a PBIS school for several years, we will continue to implement the program as it has resulted in a reduction in discipline referrals, with students recognizing that we do care about them and their choices. [Indicator 10].
We will continue to look for ways in which we can bring students together to ensure that all our students feel like they belong and know they are cared for and supported. We hope that students will recognize and benefit from these resources and supports. Our hope is that every student will become involved and feel safe, cared for, and valued as a member of our South River High School community.
