Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Our community exhibits enormous pride in Chesapeake High School, filling our stadiums for athletic matches and our theatre for musical and dramatic performances. Our students come from a variety of experiences and traditions and have a variety of individual strengths and needs. Multiple generations call themselves Cougars; and school spirit is strong for both current students and alumni, establishing a tradition of Character, Honor, and Scholarship. Many Chesapeake High School alumni return to live on the Pasadena Peninsula so that their children can attend and experience the schools in the community. In addition, many Chesapeake High alumni come back to serve and work in the community. Numerous current faculty members are alumni who have returned to the school as teachers in almost every department.
Our community has recently experienced some challenging situations around ethnic differences, which created an undercurrent among some of our students. Our deliberate approach to promoting inclusiveness and community among all of our students and stakeholders is helping to strengthen the pride and commitment that we all have to our Cougar Community. We strive to be a school where every interaction is respectful without exception.

Demographically, the student population of CHS is predominantly white with few minority students (84% White, 5% African-American, 5% Hispanic, 2% Asian, and 3% of the students have identified as Mixed Race). Students receiving special education services make-up 11% of the population, while 17% qualify for Free and Reduced Meals (FARMS). This unique dynamic presents an opportunity to educate and inspire staff, students, and families to agents of change for the culture of Chesapeake moving forward. Student leaders, along with school administrators and faculty, are working to enhance the narrative related to the climate and culture of the school.
The faculty and staff work everyday to ensure that all students feel connected to a peer, adult, club, group, or organization to continuously strengthen every student’s sense of both well-being and being an integral member of our Chesapeake High community. Faculty and staff feel a sense of community as well, which is evidenced by the number of alumni who teach and work in our school.
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS

The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community.
