Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture

  • Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

    Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County: 

    • What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
    • Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
    • How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
    • What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need?  How do we help our families receive the supports they need?

Our School Culture

  • Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.

    North County High School continues to be a pillar of success in the community largely due to its PBIS, International Trade, Transportation and Tourism (IT3), STEM, and AVID programs. These programs afford students the opportunities to gain experiences that allow them to develop marketable job skills, work ethic, and college and career readiness which they take with them and employ outside of the school as members of the community and global economy. 

    Through our IT3 Signature program, students learn about the trade, transportation, and tourism industries, with the opportunity to meet industry professionals and obtain paid internships at hotels, restaurants, and BWI airport. Students enrolled in the STEM program are taught a rigorous program by engineering and computer science professionals. In STEM, students have field experiences where they travel to places like NASA and the Air and Space Museum, meet leading industrial professionals, participate in video chats with aerospace engineers, and work paid internships with the National Security Administration (NSA). The AVID program prepares students with 21st century skills to succeed in their transition from school to college and career. Schoolwide, the AVID program offers students opportunities in all classrooms to excel in WICOR: writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and readiness.

    The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program encourages students to maintain excellent attendance, grades, and conduct by celebrating students who meet targets with quarterly incentives. 

    The faculty and staff of North County have made it a point to get to know the stories of each and every one of our students. Decisions are made with the diverse needs of our students in mind, and we take into consideration the unique needs of our students. When our data showed that our students were struggling academically and many did not have transportation to stay after school, the school adjusted its schedule to include a “Knight Time” period. During Knight Time, students have time - within the day - to get extra help from teachers, make up work, and join clubs. Research supports that these initiatives provide opportunities for students to connect to school and increase their academic success.  

    In addition to its highly committed staff who work closely with parents and students, North County has a network of wrap-around services for students needing extra support with food, housing, transportation, mental health, speech, and language interpretation. North County has a full time School Psychologist, Social Worker, and Pupil Personnel Worker (PPW) who are available to support students and families in need. North County also offers after school meals for its students and a food pantry for its families. In response to the needs of the greater school community, North County has developed partnerships with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Anne Arundel County Community College, Department of Labor, Department of Health, Anne Arundel County Workforce Development, and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce. With these partnerships, North County has been able to offer its students, parents, and residents access to on-site drivers education, job fairs, hiring fairs, and apprenticeships. North County also hosts “Not My Child” to support parents and community members in the fight against the current opioid crisis.
