STEM/BMAH News - Highlights of the STEM and BioMed Allied Health (BMAH) magnet programs, teachers, and students in our six AACPS middle and high school STEM magnet schools

2023-2024 School Year

5/26/24    Central Middle School 8th grade STEM student, Evelyn Beal, qualified and competed at the National Science Bee in Orlando, Florida this past weekend.  She finished in the top 20% of all competitors. Well done, Evelyn! [read more]

4/18/24    STEM Office leaders, South River STEM Program lead, OMMS STEM Program Principal & STEM Program lead, and Assistant Superintendent for College and Career Readiness presented at the Magnet Schools of America (MSA) National Conference in New York City.  AACPS staff shared how to form strong high-quality STEM partnerships with community-based non-profits, government agencies, higher education, and industry stakeholders. 4/3/24    AACPS held the 2024 STEM Students of Excellence Awards Ceremony in the auditorium of Lindale Middle School.  Eighteen seniors - one from each of our high schools - were recognized and honored as their high school's graduating senior who exemplifies STEM student excellence.  In turn, each of these STEM student awardees selected and honored the K-12 teacher who most inspired them while on their STEM learning journey in Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

3/16/24 Over 100 South River students - many STEM students - attended the Regional FBLA Conference and competition in Ocean City, Maryland.  68 students qualified to compete at the National FBLA conference to be held this summer in Orlando, Florida.  Not only did a significant number of students win, but the school FBLA Team as a whole placed second in the state at this conference.  [read more]

3/12/24    South River High School STEM Magnet Program students, Elias Arnold & Eric Gu, were awarded finalist status that allows them to enter the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair.  They will travel to Los Angeles, CA this coming May to compete at the international level. 2/27/24    Glen Burnie High School STEM-BMAH Magnet Program Site-Based Coordinator, Carol Young, was recognized as an outstanding teacher leader in the Maryland State Excellence in Gifted & Talented Education (EGATE) Awards Ceremony held at North County High School.  Ms. Young is among the award-winning PK- 12 Maryland Public School educators who support gifted and talented or advanced education programs aligned with Maryland’s Criteria for Excellence: Gifted and Talented Program Guidelines and COMAR 13A.04.07 Gifted and Talented Education.

1/29/24    South River High School is named a National Merit School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America (MSA) for their excellent STEM Magnet Program.  MSA is the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. South River High School's STEM Magnet leadership team will receive the award at MSA's National Conference in New York City in April. 12/21/23    Old Mill Middle School South STEM Magnet Program and BMAH Magnet Program Alumnus, Anagh Asatvan, returned to OMMS while on winter break to share good news with Ms. Hartman, STEM Department Chair, STEM students, and his former teachers. Anagh earned a perfect score on his Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), has received multiple acceptances from medical schools around the country, and will graduate from the University of Maryland (UMD) this coming spring (2024).

11/18/23    Central Middle School STEM VEX Teams competed in the VEX IQ Robotics competition in Hereford County. Four students qualified for the State competition and two qualified for the International competition in Iowa in February of 2024.  

11/11/23    Old Mill Middle School South STEM Magnet Program Alumna and USNA 2023 graduating Computer Science senior, Abigail Ward, named 2024 Rhodes Scholar.  Only 32 students are chosen annually from the United States to serve as Rhodes Scholars. They are chosen not only for their outstanding academics, but for their character, commitment to others, and for the potential for leadership in their chosen career fields. 11/10/23    Old Mill Middle School South Named National Certified Magnet School for Outstanding STEM Program. With this award, Magnet Schools of America (MSA) recognizes OMMS to be among the most exemplary magnet school programs in the nation for their high-quality, innovative curriculum and instructional programs that promote choice, equity, diversity, and academic excellence for all students. 10/20/23   South River former STEM Magnet Program student, Aiden Workman (Class of 2021), has been named a “STEM All-Star” in the Henson School of Science and Technology at Salisbury University. They were identified by a professor of a sophomore level course as an outstanding student during the 1st half of our Fall 2023 semester.  Dr. Ryan Schifler, Associate Dean of the Henson School of Science and Technology at Salisbury University, stated, "I would like to commend South River HS teachers on preparing their students to be ready for our challenging curriculum. Their success so far is due in large part to the education and attention they received from South River teachers. I just wanted to express my gratitude and congratulations to South River's teachers and the school administration for doing a great job preparing students for their future!"

10/18/23    Glen Burnie High School BioMedical Allied Health (BMAH) Program launched MED Talks with it's inaugural guest speaker, Carissa Colangelo, from MedStar Health.  MED Talks showcase healthcare careers through the lens of healthcare professionals in our community.  The experiences and/or college paths needed to enter the targeted career paths are discussed.  Ms. Colangelo highlighted Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant careers in our first MED Talks sessions. Our next MED Talks session will host healthcare professionals from University of Maryland Medical Center Shock Trauma Unit.   

8/11/23    Central Middle School STEM Teacher, Mr. Rob King, was recognized as a 2023-2024 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Outstanding Teacher, one of only 38 in the nation. This is the fourth year in a row that he has been named a PLTW Outstanding Teacher. Mr. King is still in the running for PLTW National Teacher of the Year.  

2022-2023 School Year

7/15/23     South River Solar Hawks traveled to Texas in July to compete in the Solar Car Challenge sponsored by Oncor, Texas Instruments, Lockheed Martin, Hunt Oil Company, Dell Computers, Green Mountain Energy, The Acclivus Corporation, Austin Energy, and EarthX. [Solar Car Challenge website]

5/6/23       The Maryland Tech Council named North County High School STEM teacher, Michelle Hymowitz, as one of two STEM Teachers of the year. The largest technology and life science trade association in the state recognizes those who make outstanding contributions to Maryland’s technology and life sciences communities. [What's Up? 5/3/23       North County High School STEM student, Claire Birge, was awarded the 2023 Engineering Scholarship by the Scholarship for Scholars organization, a non-profit group that awards scholarships to top performing high school seniors who reside in Anne Arundel County. Since its inception in 1983, the organization has awarded over $3,000,000. [Scholarship for Scholars website]

5/1/23       Lindale Middle School STEM students traveled as part of the school's Hyper Lynx Robotics Club to Dallas,Texas to compete in the VEX IQ World Robotics competition. The club qualified two teams for the state and world tournaments, earned two new trophies for the trophy case and received official citations from Senator Pam Beidel and Congressman John Sarbanes for their hard work and dedication to robotics. 4/14/23     The Fort Meade Alliance (FMA) sponsored Tech Mania for more than 100 students from four area high schools — Chesapeake High, Glen Burnie High, North County High (STEM magnet) and South River High (STEM magnet).  Students who participated in this STEM-related field trip, which took place at Anne Arundel Community College at Arundel Mills, engaged in hands-on activities, witnessed STEM-rich demos, and networked with STEM professionals from across the region. 2/27/23     Old Mill MIddle School South has been named a National Magnet School of Excellence and Lindale Middle School has been recognized as a National Certified Magnet School by the Magnet Schools of America (MSA). MSA is a national professional education association that supports magnet schools and sponsors a national awards program that recognizes top magnet schools in the United States. 7/3/22       South River High School senior STEM student, Caroline Finn, was elected by her peers to serve as State President of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) for the State of Maryland for 2022-23. Ms. Finn has been an active member of her school's chapter of FBLA since her ninth grade year. She looks forward to using her leadership skills at the state level of FBLA. Katie Boetig, also a SRHS senior STEM student, was elected to serve as FBLA's Region 3 Vice President for the 2022-23 school year. The elections took place at the National FBLA Conference 6/27-7/3/22 held in Chicago, IL. [Maryland's FBLA website] 

6/15/22     Glen Burnie High School STEM/BMAH student, Sulynn Amrhein, was awarded professional STEM mentor support from the Fort Meade Alliance for her innovative idea to construct and test a portable airplane runway that can be deployed from a plane in remote areas where access is difficult.  She used this support during the 2022-23 school year as she worked on the project in her BioMed Allied Health (BMAH) Capstone Course.  Ms. Amrhein has some experience related to the topic; she earned her pilot's license earlier this year.  She is interested in becoming a flight surgeon in her future.
