Gifted and Talented Identification Process

  • Video Transcript: Gifted and Talented Identification Process in AACPS

The Annotated Code of Maryland and Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) requires school districts to conduct a universal screening process no later than Grade 3 with additional identification occurring during the 3 – 5 and 6 – 9 grade bands. AACPS conducts universal screening of students in grades 2, 5, and 7.

Once a student is identified as Gifted or Advanced, they do not lose that designation. However, all students not previously identified as Gifted in BOTH Reading and Math will be re-screened in Grades 5 and 7. At that time, students may be considered for a Gifted or Advanced identification if they were not previously identified as such.

AACPS recognizes that achievement, ability, and potential play a role in identifying gifted students; therefore, multiple measures are used to identify students.
