Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Throughout the building there is evidence of art integration, with artwork, student-created projects, and murals on display. The Excellence in Elementary Education (EEE) program provides our students with cultural opportunities for learning, including music, art and dance, through a concentration in Arts and Humanities. The EEE Curriculum also provides students opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as well as project-based learning and connections to the real world Additionally, our entire Cultural Arts Staff (Media, Art, Music, Physical Education, and Arts and Humanities) provides our students with opportunities to integrate project-based learning, team building, technology, and critical thinking into their school day. Our goal at Brooklyn Park Elementary is to prepare our students to be positive contributors to a global workforce.
At Brooklyn Park Elementary, we are focused on providing support for the whole child. We provide Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). MTSS is defined as “the practice of providing high-quality instruction and interventions matched to student need, monitoring progress frequently to make decisions about changes in instruction or goals, and applying child response data to important educational decisions.” These systems provide opportunities for student learning at all levels, enhancements, and interventions for math, reading, and social-emotional learning. In addition, Title I funding is utilized throughout the school year to host Math and Reading Nights which provide parents with both an overview of what their child is learning and additional resources on how to best support the instructional needs of their child.

At BPES, we provide support for student growth and learning beyond the school-house walls. We also provide support to our families and the greater Brooklyn Park Community. Our PTA and community partners (faith-based organizations and business partners) provide school supplies, technology, scholarships, field trips, mentoring, and food to families in need. These organizations include the Rotary Club of Glen Burnie, Severna Park United Methodist Church, the Brooklyn Park Community Association, Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church, the Pumphrey Community Association, BWI, the United States Coast Guard, the Anne Arundel County Police Department, and the Chesapeake Art Center. Title I funding is utilized throughout the school year to host Math and Reading Nights which provide parents with both an overview of what their child is learning and additional resources on how to best support the instructional needs of their child.
Great schools are not only an educational institution, but they also serve as places where the community can gather with their families. As a result of our commitment to serving our community, we organize events to help our families celebrate the Brooklyn Park community and the achievements of our students. We have organized community picnics, during which community resource organizations are invited to share information with families. We have also opened our doors for events such as Special Friends Day, American Education Week, Back to School Night, Muffins with Moms, I Love Brooklyn Park Day, and Donuts with Dads. Through events such as Winter/Spring Concerts, Arts Night, and Talent Shows, we provide our community with opportunities to observe our students’ talents. Specifically, our partnership with the Chesapeake Art Center provides an opportunity for our students to perform on a professional stage. At BPES, we believe that the school-community partnership is not only vital to our students’ success, but vital to the growth of the community.
CHALLENGES TO STUDENT SUCCESS
