Brooklyn Park Elementary School

Strategic Plan Indicators

  • After each school leadership team reflected on its school culture, community, and the key contributing factors to student growth, they used this information to select the Strategic Plan Indicators that would have the greatest positive impact for their students.  Each school was directed to select two to six indicators on which to focus during the 2018-19 school year.  Certainly, we all know that if we focus narrowly and deeply, we are more likely to realize positive results.  The indicators that this school’s leadership team selected are noted below.

  • 2019-2020 Strategic Plan Indicator(s) Chosen by the School - 2, 5 (expand to view details)

Indicator 2.  INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS WHO REPORT THAT AACPS STAFF CARE FOR AND SUPPORT THEM

Indicator 5. INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS WHO READ ON OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL BY THE END OF SECOND GRADE

NOTE:  Brooklyn Park Elementary originally chose to work on Indicators 2 and 5 for the 2018-19 school year. As the school year unfolded, the school’s Leadership Team decided to broaden our focus to include Indicators 6 (INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-8 WHO MEET OR EXCEED EXPECTATIONS ON STANDARDIZED READING, LANGUAGE ARTS, AND MATHEMATICS ASSESSMENTS) and 10 (INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS ATTENDING SCHOOL ON A DAILY BASIS).

First, we realized that working on attendance (Indicator 10) and timely arrival of students to school will improve access to learning and consistency of learning for all students. Working on this indicator supports us to build a strong learning culture in our school.

Moreover, we believe that it is more natural for our school’s teachers to focus on K-5 Reading as a continuum (Indicator 6), instead of narrowing the reading focus to only the primary grades. Adding these two additional indicators increases our ability to target and integrate our work meaningfully in our school and community.

Strategic Journey

  • Throughout the next 3 years, schools will focus on their chosen Strategic Plan Indicators as the drivers to increase student engagement and achievement within their schools.  They will choose strategies to help them grow or increase within each indicator and will monitor and evaluate the student and school changes that take place along the journey.  Below you will see what this school imagines their students and school to look like in 2021 after having focused and worked on their chosen indicators for three years.

Our Vision of Success: 2021

  • At Brooklyn Park, all students know that the staff and faculty care for, welcome, and support them. Relationships are the first step to developing life-long learners. Teachers use a growth mindset when they interact with students and use strategies to teach social skills and social problem-solving. Brooklyn Park is a restorative school, and staff and faculty use restorative language whenever interacting with students. Students have positive adult interactions, see celebrations of their cultural backgrounds, and celebrations of student accomplishments. Students, families, parents and community members say that they are proud of Brooklyn Park Elementary School and feel like they belong. They recommend their school to friends and family members and are excited to come to school every day.

Teachers know and understand student learning profiles. They plan lessons and deliver instruction that is differentiated to match student learning profiles. Lessons are engaging, and students participate in their own learning. Students know what is expected of them, what they are learning, how they are learning, and when they have learned it. Students are able to speak about the growth they have made as citizens, readers, and mathematicians. They will feel that they are walking into a building that supports them and their growth, and that ALL Means ALL!

Teachers meet weekly in collaborative planning sessions, so they can dive deep into standards and data and monitor student progress. Once a week, we host Instructional Walkthroughs and use that feedback to grow our teachers and identify additional professional development needs.  Brooklyn Park faculty and staff work together to support all of our students and their needs. We put students first, and we work collaboratively to encourage our students and their growth. Brooklyn Park is the best elementary school in North County!
