Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture

  • Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

    • What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
    • Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
    • How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
    • What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need?  How do we help our families receive the supports they need?

Our School Culture

  • Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.

    Linthicum Elementary welcomes family involvement, and there are many visitors to our building each day.  Our families are very supportive, and we have a dedicated group of parents/family members who make up our PTA and daily volunteers.  Community volunteers are visible throughout our building, running the school store, assisting with preparation of materials, working in the media center, and supporting field trips and classroom celebrations. We have partnerships with the Linthicum Lions Club and the Linthicum United Methodist Church, who provide donations and support for families in need. In addition, the Linthicum Women’s Club donates dictionaries to our fifth grade students achieving academic excellence. Our LES family events are well-attended, especially Grandfriends’ Day and Spring Class Picnics. We strive to achieve 100% parent conference attendance, and increase the number of families involved in academic or informational activities (Global Studies night, Math/Reading nights).

    The staff members at LES value relationships; and are dedicated to equitable practices and our students’ achievement and welfare. In our efforts to increase positive relationships, we  include ALL staff members in faculty meetings, training and celebrations.   In addition, Administration and Student Support Staff have begun the implementation of Restorative Practices when problem-solving with students. We use Morning Meetings on a daily basis in all classrooms as well as during staff meetings to start each day positively.  We are a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) school, which supports all of our students and positively impacts our learning environment while reducing the number of discipline referrals.  

    Our Leadership Team supports our teachers through academic coaching and professional development, as well as targeted intervention using data to identify specific areas of need in math, writing, and language arts. Additionally, LES is an Enhancing Elementary Excellence (EEE) school, specifically focused on Global Studies. Our EE program uses an interdisciplinary learning perspective, connecting students to the world. LES also has a partnership  with Young Audiences,  providing an artist in residency program for different grade levels. Linthicum Elementary also provides students with additional opportunities for after school enrichment through STEM, 24 Math Club, and EEE Cooking Club. These partnerships and opportunities positively impact instruction to raise the rigor for our students, challenging them to grow and exceed standards.

  • The leadership team in each AACPS school reviewed all of the factors that may influence their students’ engagement and achievement in school; these challenges include academic data elements, community history, and socio-economic aspects of each community.
