Key Challenges to Student Success
-
The students who attend Eastport Elementary School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood. While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Eastport Elementary, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.
This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.
Challenges to Student Success
-
Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges
- Discipline Rates
- Numbers of FARMS students
- Title I Status
- Quarterly Assessments scores - English
- PARCC Scores - English/Language Arts (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
Eastport Elementary School is a small Title I school located in the Eastport community of Annapolis. 71.89% of the students are eligible to receive free lunch. During the 2017-2018 school year, Eastport processed a large number of discipline referrals. These referrals resulted in a loss of teaching and learning time. Therefore, increasing positive, engaged behavior was our first priority. The language arts (listening, speaking, reading and writing) often provide an avenue for further learning. Therefore, ensuring our students are proficient with the language arts will support student growth in all academic areas.
Data shows that almost half of our students are reading below grade level in the primary and intermediate grades indicating a substantial need for reading intervention. According to the WIDA Correlation Guide, most of our ELL students are reading at expected levels, given their language development.
